Case Study: Con Edison

UI/UX designer-information architect for Con Edison consumer facing website redesign.

Con Edison

Requirement involved a complete re-design of the Con Edison consumer facing website. There were two competing bids for the project, and my homepage design won out. I was contracted to work with Con Edison's in house team of managers and their sub contracted developers to design and build the front end of what would become Con Edison's new current website.

Project Requirements

  • Complete re-design of the consumer facing website.
  • Update the old, outdated design, and modernize using new web standards and best practices.
  • Provide a robust design that could expand and grow, allowing new ideas to be introduced and fit within the paradigm of the updated design with ease.

Project Overview

Con Edison contracted me after an extensive search and reviewing competing bids to design what would become their new consumer facing website. It required a new styleguide, which adhered to the Con Ed branding and aesthetic, a new sitemap which allowed for categories and pages to be added in the future, and a complete HTML5 and CSS modernization. I created custom reusable bands for all scenarios, and a simple, easy to understand navigation that reduced the amount of clicks it took to find content.

The Challenge

The biggest challenge I faced was creating a user experience that was simplified for all consumers, regardless of web savvy, and at the same time keep verbiage as minimal as possible in order to serve as many facets of their company's services as possible, keeping all department links persistently visible - yet not crowd the page with information overload. A daunting challenge.

The Approach & Solution

Through extensive consumer research and user testing, along with management guidance, I was able to design an experience that was simple, yet all encompassing. Using progressive disclosure and intuitive navigation which maximized screen real estate, It all fit, yet was not overwhelming to the casual visitor.

This project took 9 months to complete and represented a complete overhaul of the existing website, requiring a full re-launch. Skillset utilized included: Axure RP, HTML5, CSS3, Javascript.

Client Testimonial

It took a long time to find the right UX person to trust with revising the Con Ed online brand. Steve Mena brought many great ideas to the table and was a pleasure to work with. He has very strong opinions and is usually right, as we learned. I found it best to step aside and let him do his thing, he delivers on his promises. His knowledge and expertise borders on intimidating. In a good way.
